Carpentry in Zurich and the region
I am Rafael Baumann, a trained carpenter and architect. Together with a small, well-practised team I take on carpentry work in Zurich, on the right shore of the lake and in the Zurich Oberland — from roof structures to carports. The first conversation is free.

Wood is the material I started with. A four-year apprenticeship, then building sites, then architecture school. That order shapes how we work: first understand what the house carries and needs, then build — properly joined, without shortcuts that only show up ten years later.
A carpentry business with an architect in-house means: workshop drawings, permit questions and execution come from one source. You explain your project once, not three times.
Our carpentry services
Roof structure and roofing
Repairing, reinforcing or newly erecting roof structures. Sarking, insulation, battens, roof windows. The roof is the carpenter's core trade.
Roof renovation: costs and process →Added storeys and extensions in timber
An additional storey in prefabricated timber is light, quick to erect and needs no drying time. Planned and built by one team.
Adding a storey →Interior fit-out
Walls, ceilings, panelling, floors, built-ins. What we draw, we also build — from a single shelf to a complete fit-out.
Interior fit-out in wood →Carport, pergola, shelter
Made to measure instead of a kit: a carport or pergola that suits the house and lasts for decades. Whether a permit is needed, we clarify beforehand.
Pergola and carport: costs →Timber facade and deck
Timber cladding that greys evenly instead of staining. Wooden decks with a proper substructure so nothing rots.
Timber facade: types and costs →Repairs and small jobs
A creaking staircase. A door that catches. A beam with moisture damage. No job is too small for us.

Where we work
Our studio is at Dienerstrasse 19 in Zurich's Kreis 4. From there we cover the whole greater Zurich area:
- City of Zurich — all districts, from Seefeld to Höngg.
- Right shore of the lake — Zollikon, Küsnacht, Erlenbach, Herrliberg, Meilen, Uetikon, Männedorf, Stäfa and Hombrechtikon.
- Glatt valley — Wallisellen, Dübendorf, Volketswil and Kloten.
- Zurich Oberland — Uster, Wetzikon, Pfäffikon and the villages in between.
- Left shore and Limmat valley — Thalwil, Horgen, Schlieren and Dietikon.
If a project fits, we travel further — our barn conversion is in Giswil in Obwalden.
Projects in timber
Whether a carpentry business works properly shows in what it has built. Two projects in which timber plays the lead role:
Frequently asked questions
What does a carpenter cost per hour?
In the Zurich area, the hourly rate is CHF 95 to 130, depending on the work and qualification. For larger jobs we quote a fixed price per item — then the hours are our risk, not yours.
Do you also work on the right shore of the lake and in the Oberland?
Yes. Zurich, the right shore of the lake from Zollikon to Hombrechtikon, the Glatt valley and the Zurich Oberland are our daily catchment area. Travel is charged fairly and stated before the quote.
Do you also take on small jobs?
Yes. A roof repair, a creaking staircase, a canopy — we fit such jobs in between larger projects, usually within two to three weeks.
Does a carport need a building permit?
Usually yes, even though many claim otherwise. In the Canton of Zurich only small ancillary structures are exempt, and the thresholds differ by municipality. We clarify this before building, not after — details in the guide to building permits.
What makes you different from a large carpentry firm?
With us, the same hand plans and builds. Rafael is a trained carpenter and an architect: you get the workshop drawings, the structural coordination and the execution without an interface in between. That saves meetings, misunderstandings and usually money.
