Interior Fit-Out with Wood: Ideas and Examples
Wood is the only material that makes a house feel warmer without touching the heating. But it has to be used well — otherwise warmth tips over into sauna.
I trained as a carpenter. Wood is my material, and this article is a portfolio with instructions: where wood shines in interior fit-out, which species have proven themselves, and how to use it without ending up looking like a chalet catalogue.
Fit-out in rented and condominium flats
In Zurich most people rent. Interior fit-out is possible there too, but the landlord has to agree, in writing. Anything permanently installed belongs to the flat in the end, not to you. Agree in advance what stays when you move out and what gets removed. Otherwise you end up arguing about a fitted cupboard that is nicer than anything else in the flat.
In a condominium you decide within your own four walls. As soon as load-bearing walls, service shafts, windows or the facade are affected, the owners' meeting decides. What applies is set out in the house rules. That is not paperwork; it is the difference between a project this autumn and a project the year after next.
Where wood shines in interior fit-out
The floor is the classic: an oiled oak floor carries thirty years of family life and gets more beautiful rather than shabbier. Strip parquet, wide planks or herringbone — the choice shapes a room's character more than any wall colour.
The ceiling is the underrated spot: a wooden ceiling brings a room down acoustically and atmospherically, especially in tall period rooms. Finely structured and finished in a light tone it feels airy — nothing has to remind you of dark seventies panelling.
Built-in furniture is the supreme discipline: wardrobes, benches, shelves and coat racks, built into the house to the millimetre. Built-ins turn leftover corners into storage and pass-through zones into places. This is where I most like to work — design and craft come from the same way of thinking.
The staircase does more than connect floors — it is the biggest piece of furniture in the house. It has its own article: Renovating a wooden staircase. And in the bathroom, wood works remarkably well despite what your gut says, as long as ventilation and waterproofing are right — an oak washstand is the fastest way to turn a wet room into a real room.

The rule against the chalet effect
Wood is at its strongest next to calm counterparts: white plaster, lime, stone, steel. One wood surface per room may dominate — floor or ceiling or furniture, not everything at once. And one wood species per home, two at most. Cover everything in wood and you lose exactly the warmth you were after: it needs contrast to work.
On finishes: oiled rather than lacquered, wherever everyday life allows it. Oiled wood ages with dignity and can be refreshed in patches. Lacquer is a skin — beautiful until the first deep scratch.

What does built-in furniture from a joiner cost?
As a rough guide: from CHF 1,500 to 3,000 per linear metre of wardrobe, depending on material and interior fittings. More than the furniture store — for a piece that fits exactly and grows old with the house.
Does wood work with underfloor heating?
Yes, with the right build-ups and formats — engineered parquet is made for it. What matters is that flooring, screed and flow temperature are properly matched.
How do I look after oiled wood surfaces?
Vacuum, wipe with a barely damp cloth, re-oil every few years — high-wear spots more often. No comparison to the effort a damaged lacquered floor creates.
