Urban Timber Construction Today

Zurich · 2022 · Study project

The project explores the design, structural, and construction possibilities of timber construction and examines its potential in architectural expression. The starting point was an independent exploration of theme selection, materiality, site, and objectives, initiating an individual design process. Practical experience in timber construction, particularly through on-site work, formed an important foundation for understanding the material. This revealed the wide range of expressive and joining possibilities that wood offers as a building material. These insights directly influenced the design work. At the center of the project is the search for an architectural expression that emerges both from the inherent properties of wood and from external influences. This expression develops from the interplay of design, structural, and construction aspects of timber building, as well as from urban and contextual conditions of the site. A catalog of selected examples from different regions of the world serves as a reference base. These were analyzed and integrated into the design process. In connection with the specific requirements of the site, a multi-layered and playful architecture emerged, in which different influences become subtly visible and manifest themselves in individual moments. The project is understood as an investigation and representation of a possible architectural expression in timber construction and demonstrates how the potential of this material can be explored and implemented in design.
